My 2010 St. George Marathon Story: It started at 4:00 am with a bus trip up Snow Canyon to the base of Pine Valley. Everyone expeted 30 degrees weather but I was lucky it was only 47. Still they had big fires to help keep runners warm. Thousands of people kept coming up on buses - almost 7000 people were at the beginning of this race. I ran the first 14 miles with Darby - quite fast actually, those first miles seem to fly by but then something happened to my knee - for whatever reason, probably the downhill grade of the course I couldn't put pressure on my right knee. So I had to walk! Darby hung with me for a bit but then she had a race to run also so off she went! A little disheartened but still determined I kept running then walking, running then walking. When I reached the 16th mile there was an aid station there where I had my knee wrapped so tight I couldn't bend it at all. That made all the difference - I ran peg leg style the next 10 miles swinging my right leg out and in. It's amazing how much momentum you can create running that way! I kept that up until the last mile or so then I tried to run/walk the rest of the way in. I past a guy who had already finished and he yelled at me "Keep going girl, drag that leg just one more mile". One more mile was a nice thing to hear.
2nd Marathon completed 5 hours 32 minutes and 33 seconds...wow that was a long morning.

Thanks Hank - but you are the one that rocks - how many marathons is that for you 14? You are my marathon hero!
ReplyDeleteI think you both rock. Maddie and Mason get some credit for waiting for Aunt Cush to come up the street. You set a great example of endurdance for all of us

You are amazing. A marathon is hard enough, but to run it w/ a bad knee! Something I should/need to do myself!
